Real Estate Tips: Fire Safety Month

October is Fire Safety Month!!!

These simple tips could prevent a home fire

  • Change your smoke detector batteries at least once a year. A good rule of thumb when you set your clocks back in the fall, change your batteries. Check to make sure the alarm works after replacing the batteries by pushing the test button.
  •  Vacuum your smoke detectors at least once a month.
  • Keep a flashlight by your bed and check it at least once a month to make sure it is working properly. Also keep one near your child’s bed  and check that one as well.
  •  Check your fire extinguisher annually if you do not have one you can get them for less than $30.00. You will want an all-purpose one and make sure it has classes A, B & C listed on it. They do expire after a time so when it gets close to the expiration date you will need to toss it and get a new one. You want to have at least 2 available one in the kitchen is essential!
  •  Create at least 2 escape routes and practice them with your family. If you have a multi-story home you want to get a portable ladder. Children get confused during fires and can get disoriented from the smoke so you want to practice with them.

Statistics

  • Heating equipment is the second leading cause of home fires causing 36% of home fires in the US during the months of December through February.
  •  Kitchen fires comprise 34% of home fires
  •  74% of reported home fire deaths result from fires in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms
  •  Children age 5 and under and the elderly are the most likely to die from home fire

Fireplaces & Space Heaters

  • If your home has a fireplace you want to have it inspected and cleaned annually by a licensed professional. This can cost you around $175-$200 for a cleaning and inspection.
  •  If you use a portable heater – it must be at least 36 inches away from ANYTHING that can burn. If it is an electric space heater check it when you bring it out in the winter for fraying or splitting wires. If the wires are damaged toss the unit and get a new one.

Dryers and Dryer Vents

  • Check your dryer vent at least once every 3 months and remove built up lint
  •  Clean lint from the lint filter every time you use your dryer
  •  If you have a plastic dryer hose replace it with a flexible metal one
  •  Do not use your dryer when you are not at home

Real Estate: About Denver, NC

  • Denver is commonly referred as “Denver of the East” and “West Norman”.
  • The historic town dates back to before the revolutionary war to a time when the Catawba Indians lived along the eastern banks of the river that still bears their name, and the Cherokee Indians lived to the west.
  • The first bold pioneers known to settle this area were Adam Sherrill and his 8 sons, who migrated from  Pennsylvania in 1747, and John Beatty who settled here in 1749. Both the Sherrills and Beatty settled along the west bank of the Catawba near shoals in the river that made it possible to cross.
  • These crossing points or “fords” were thereafter referred to as “Sherrill’s Ford” and “Beattie’s Ford”, names that still live on in the area to this day.
  • The early settlers of the area were primarily Scotch-Irish and Germans that came from the north. By 1750 a Scotch-Irish settlement covered both banks of the Catawba river.
  • Battle of Cowan’s Ford took place here as well as a number of significant Revolutionary events. The actual location of the battle is now under water (about where Cowans Ford Dam sits) but you will find a monument a little south in Mecklenburg County (across from McGuire Entrance).
  • The Denver area was settled ca. 1770 and, because of its location adjacent to a swampy area / small pond, it got the name “Dry Pond”.  The small pond was once located at the corner of Hwy 16 & Campground Road (where Bank of America branch is today).
  • In 1873 “Dry Pond” was renamed “Denver” by D. Matt Thompson, the local school principal. Many locals felt “Dry Pond” presented an unattractive image so he renamed it after Colorado’s Capital. (Same year that Colorado was being considered admission to the Union).
  • The gymnasium at Rock Springs School was built as a part of the North Carolina Emergency Relief Administration, part of the economic stimulus package for the Great Depression 1932-1935.
  • In 1971 the little town of Denver lost its incorporated status when the State of North Carolina rescinded the charters of several inactive N.C. cities due to having failed to elect a local government for many years.
  • One of Denver’s major features is its “main street,” which is now known today as “Old Highway 16.” This road, once state highway 16, was one of North Carolina’s first state highways, receiving that designation in 1928.
  • Denver is also home to the Rock Springs Campground that has been the site of revivals and camp meetings since 1794. One of the few continuous camp meeting still occurring to date.
  • Today Denver sits on the west shores of Lake Norman, the largest man-made lake in North Carolina, that was created in 1964 when the Cowans Ford Dam, crossing the Catawba River, was complete.
  • Denver’s popularity has grown over the years with the addition of Lake Norman and has become a popular recreation spot, for fishing, swimming and boating. The fast and easy access to Charlotte, Hickory, Cornelius, Huntersville, Mooresville & Mount Holly has also helped fuel Denver’s growth along with lower tax rates.

Real Estate: About Statesville, NC

  • Statesville was founded in January, 1789, by an act of the General Assembly just after North Carolina joined the United States.
  • The Statesville area was originally known as the Fourth Creek Settlement, named after Fourth Creek and was established as a “site for the courthouse and stocks.”
  • The history of Statesville’s name is vague, but it is believed to originally be named “the states vil.” By 1790, the first courthouse, a log structure, was being built on a lot purchased from Fergus Sloan next to the Fourth Creek Presbyterian Meeting House on an area that most of us have come to call “the square.”
  • The lots around the courthouse were soon sold at a public auction for other businesses, thus, beginning downtown Statesville.
  • The site picked for Statesville was in the midst of a settlement of Scotch Irish Presbyterians who had moved to the area, originally part of Rowan County, 30 to 40 years earlier.
  • Two miles north of Statesville was Fort Dobbs which was built to defend the forefront of civilization from 1756 to about 1764.  It was considered to be the center of the district of the Revolutionary War.
  • Statesville was incorporated as a city in 1847.
  • The first railroad reached Statesville in 1858, linking Salisbury to Asheville, and was known as the Western North Carolina Railroad.
  • The Atlantic, Tennessee & Ohio Railroad (ATO) began serving the Statesville to Charlotte line shortly after the Western service began.
  • There were originally two Depots for the two separate lines serving Statesville.  Both were apparently burned down in the late 1800’s during the Civil War and later rebuilt as a joint facility.
  • Statesville has a rich architectural heritage & currently has five National Register of Historic Place Districts including four residential districts: Broad Street/Davie Avenue, Mitchell College, Academy Hill, Race Street and the Downtown Statesville Commercial District.
  • Statesville is also home to numerous attractions and activities including Historic Downtown Statesville, Lake Norman, NASCAR, Fort Dobbs, golf, outlet shopping, unique local cuisine, arts and culture, museums and even gem mining & hot air balloon festival.
  • Statesville also serves as a gateway destination to the North Carolina Mountains, Charlotte, Winston-Salem, Hickory furniture stores or even the nearby Yadkin Valley Wine Region…find it all close by in Statesville.
  • Statesville may still be best known for its location at the intersection of Interstate 77 and Interstate 40, but after spending a few days in the area, you will discover why Statesville is more than a crossroads.
